The Darwin Agreement
The Darwin Agreement is the founding collaboration agreement that established the Restoration Decade Alliance (now Nature Restoration Alliance Australia) in support of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030).
Signed by leading Australian environmental organisations, it reflects a shared commitment to preventing ecosystem degradation, restoring damaged landscapes and waterscapes, and building a stronger national restoration movement.
The Agreement outlines a collective vision to increase public awareness of ecosystem restoration, promote best-practice restoration informed by science and Indigenous knowledge, strengthen collaboration across the restoration sector, and advocate for policies and investment that support nature recovery. It also calls on governments, industry and communities to work together to retain native ecosystems, reduce environmental impacts and accelerate restoration efforts across Australia.
As the founding document of the Alliance, the Darwin Agreement continues to provide a framework for collaboration and leadership in advancing ecological restoration and nature-positive outcomes nationwide.
